Every phone, browser and word processor now underlines our mistakes in red. So it's fair to ask: does spelling still matter?

It does — and here's why.

Spell-check doesn't think for you

Autocorrect swaps "their" for "there" as happily as the other way round. It can't tell which word you meant. A speller who knows the difference writes clearly; one who doesn't ships confusing — sometimes embarrassing — mistakes.

Spelling builds the reading brain

Learning to spell teaches children how words are built: their sounds, roots and patterns. That same knowledge makes them faster, more confident readers.

First impressions are still spelled out

A job application, an exam answer, a message to a teacher — good spelling signals care and competence. Fair or not, people notice.

Confidence carries everywhere

A child who can spell tricky words trusts themselves to try hard ones. That confidence spills into writing, speaking and beyond.

Spell-check is a helpful safety net — but you still want to know how to walk the rope.
